Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
